What Drives the Price of Sandstone
Four things set the price of a piece of sandstone: how much cutting it has had, its thickness, whether the colour is quarry-run or hand-selected, and the quantity. Split products (flagging, hydrasplit strips, rough squared blocks) need less machine time than sawn products, so crazy paving at $85/m² sits below sawn all round pavers at $120/m². Thicker stock costs more per square metre because there is simply more stone in it — a 100mm paver contains twice the stone of a 50mm one.
Quarry-run pallets, which blend the natural colour range, are the most economical; single-colour or matched selections cost more because the stone has to be sorted. Trade and civil quantities are quoted by the tonne or by the project, where per-unit prices fall.

A 40m² courtyard in sawn flagging (crazy paving) at 50mm is about $3,400 in stone, plus 10–15% extra for cuts and waste. The same courtyard in sawn all round pavers is roughly $4,800. A 10m long, 800mm high garden retaining wall is 8m² of wall face: about $960 in rough squared block pallets, or $1,440 in rockfaced blocks, plus crushed sandstone backfill. A 6m front fence clad both sides at 1.2m high is about 14.4m² of handsplit cladding, around $2,000 in stone.
