Sandstone Delivery in Sydney: Trucks, Cranes, Pallets and Site Access

Stone Front delivers sandstone from its Glenorie quarry across greater Sydney, the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains on flatbed, crane and tipper trucks. Kerbside drops suit open sites; a crane truck lifts pallets over fences, down slopes and closer to the work. Delivery is priced by suburb and access, so the most useful thing you can do is describe your site when you ask for a quote. Collection from the quarry is free.

  • Where: greater Sydney from the Hills District to the Eastern Suburbs and Sutherland Shire, plus the Central Coast and Blue Mountains.
  • How: flatbed or crane truck for pallets; tipper for crushed sandstone and loose stone; larger trucks for bulk and civil loads.
  • Weights: about 2,300kg per cubic metre of stone; a 10m² pallet of 50mm flagging is about 1.15 tonnes.
  • Price: set by suburb, truck type, number of loads and access, quoted with your stone.

Which Sydney areas does Stone Front deliver to?

Every pallet leaves the quarry at Glenorie NSW 2157 in the Hills District. We deliver across the regions below; if your suburb is not listed, ask.

RegionExample suburbs
Hills DistrictCastle Hill, Kellyville, Dural, Glenorie
North ShoreChatswood, Mosman, St Ives, Hornsby
Northern BeachesManly, Dee Why, Mona Vale, Avalon
Eastern SuburbsBondi, Randwick, Vaucluse, Maroubra
Inner WestMarrickville, Leichhardt, Strathfield, Balmain
Sydney CBD and inner citySurry Hills, Paddington, Glebe, Pyrmont
Sutherland Shire and Southern SydneyCronulla, Miranda, Engadine, Hurstville
Western SydneyParramatta, Blacktown, Penrith, Rouse Hill
South West SydneyLiverpool, Camden, Campbelltown, Narellan
Central Coast and Blue MountainsGosford, Wyong, Springwood, Katoomba

Distance from Glenorie is one part of the delivery price. Access is usually the bigger variable: a wide, flat driveway in Western Sydney and a terrace with a steep, narrow lane in the Eastern Suburbs need different trucks.

What trucks deliver sandstone?

Flatbed truck (kerbside or driveway drop)

Pallets of pavers, flagging, blocks and edging are carried on a flatbed and set down on the kerb, the nature strip or the driveway. This suits sites where the work area is close to the street and the ground is firm and level.

Crane truck

A crane truck has a hydraulic arm that lifts pallets off the deck and places them away from the truck, for example over a front fence, down a slope or closer to the back of the house. Where the stone would otherwise be barrowed along a side passage or up steps, a crane drop can save hours of handling, and the pallets end up where the work starts. A crane drop costs more than a kerbside drop, so ask for it when access needs it.

Tipper

Crushed sandstone, fill sand and loose stone are delivered by tipper and tipped where you want them, if the truck can reverse in safely. Tell us whether you want it on the driveway, on a tarp or in a particular corner, and check that nothing underground or overhead is in the way.

Bulk and civil loads

For large tonnages of boulders, crushed sandstone and fill, tip trucks, semis and truck-and-dog combinations are used, and multi-load deliveries can be sequenced to a build program.

How big and heavy are sandstone pallets?

Sandstone weighs about 2.2–2.4 tonnes per cubic metre, and 2,300kg/m³ is a fair working figure. That gives these approximate weights:

What is on the palletHow it is suppliedApproximate weight
50mm pavers or flaggingBy the m²About 115kg per m²
75mm pavers or flaggingBy the m²About 173kg per m²
100mm pavers or flaggingBy the m²About 230kg per m²
Handsplit flagging, 50mm10m² palletsAbout 1.15 tonnes per pallet
Rough squared blocks4 layers, 4m² of wall face per palletClose to 2 tonnes if blocks average 200mm deep
110mm-bed walling blocksBy the m² of wall faceAbout 253kg per m² of wall
Split logs, 300 x 300mmBy the logAbout 207kg per lineal metre
Crushed sandstoneBy the tonne1.8–2.0 tonnes per compacted m³

Weights are rounded and calculated, not weighed; rough squared blocks vary in depth, so their pallet weight varies too. A 30m² patio in 50mm pavers is about 3.5 tonnes of stone, before any base material. Our sandstone block sizes and weights guide shows how to work out the weight of any piece.

How do I check my site for delivery?

Walk the route from the street to the work area and note:

  • Truck access: a large delivery truck needs about 3.5m of width and firm ground. Note narrow streets, low branches, steep or soft driveways and tight turns.
  • Where the truck can park and how far that is from where the stone is needed.
  • Overhead power lines and trees, which matter for crane trucks and excavators.
  • Set-down area: a flat, stable spot for each pallet, as close to the work as possible. Pallets left on lawn or new paving can mark it, so put boards down if needed.
  • Steps, gates and side passages the stone must pass after it is unloaded, with their widths.
  • The footpath and road: if stone has to be left on the footpath or roadway, check your council’s rules first.

Photos of the street, the driveway and the access route are the quickest way to show us. Send them with your quote request and we can suggest the right truck before delivery day rather than on it.

What affects the cost of sandstone delivery?

Delivery is priced per job, not per square metre, and is shown with the stone on your quote. What moves it:

  1. Suburb and distance from the quarry at Glenorie.
  2. Truck type: kerbside flatbed, crane truck or tipper.
  3. Number of loads: one combined delivery costs less than several.
  4. Weight and volume: very heavy orders can need more than one truck.
  5. Access: steep, narrow or restricted sites take longer to unload.

The simplest saving is to order everything on one truck: pavers with the edging, blocks with the capping, and the crushed sandstone base with the paving. Full pallets are also more efficient to load and deliver than part pallets.

Can I collect sandstone from the quarry?

Yes. Collection is free, and the loaders will place palletised or loose stone on your ute or trailer. Collection is arranged with your quote, so ask for a pick-up time when you request it. Before you come:

  • Ask for the pallet weight and check it against your vehicle’s payload and your trailer’s rating.
  • Bring straps and make sure the load is restrained.
  • For rough squared blocks, consider coming early to hand-select loose blocks from the bins.

Visiting also lets you see colours in person and match stone to an existing wall or path. Our article on the Glenorie quarry explains how blocks are made and selected.

What happens on delivery day?

  • Keep the driveway and set-down area clear, and move cars off the street outside if you can.
  • Be on site, or leave clear written instructions and mark the set-down spot with spray paint or a hose.
  • Keep children and pets well away while pallets are being lifted.
  • Check the order against your quote before the truck leaves.
  • If a landscaper is laying the stone, time the delivery for just before they start, so the stone is not moved twice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Stone Front deliver sandstone across Sydney?

Yes. Stone Front delivers from its Glenorie quarry across greater Sydney, including the Hills District, North Shore, Northern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, CBD, Sutherland Shire, Western and South West Sydney, and out to the Central Coast and Blue Mountains. Delivery is quoted by suburb and access.

When do I need a crane truck for sandstone delivery?

Ask for crane-truck delivery when pallets cannot be set down where the work is: steep blocks, narrow side passages, backyards behind the house, or sites where stone has to be lifted over a fence. A crane drop costs more than a kerbside drop but can save hours of barrowing and double handling.

How much does a pallet of sandstone weigh?

Sandstone weighs about 2,300kg per cubic metre, so 50mm paving is roughly 115kg per m² and a 10m² pallet of 50mm flagging is about 1.15 tonnes. A 4m² pallet of rough squared blocks can be close to two tonnes, depending on block depth. Ask for the actual pallet weight if you plan to collect.

Can I collect sandstone from the quarry myself?

Yes. Collection from the Glenorie quarry is free, and the loaders will place palletised or loose stone on your ute or trailer. Check the pallet weight first and stay within your vehicle and trailer ratings. Ask for a pick-up time when you request your quote.

How can I reduce the cost of sandstone delivery?

Order everything for the job on one delivery, including base material such as crushed sandstone, so you pay for one load rather than several. Order full pallets where you can, give accurate access details so the right truck is booked first time, and have the set-down area clear on the day.
