Cladding is the fastest way to bring real stone into a project. It suits exterior feature walls, front fences and piers, garage and entry walls, pool and outdoor kitchen surrounds, and interior fireplaces and living-room walls. Everything on this page is 100% Australian sandstone in quarry-run colours from marbled white through the yellows to browns and purples.
Three Types of Sandstone Wall Cladding
Split-face handsplit cladding is the workhorse. Each piece is split from the quarry face at 30–50mm thick with a naturally textured surface, then laid in random lengths on a rendered or blockwork wall. It reads as solid stone from the street, hides the coursing of the wall behind it and is forgiving of slightly uneven substrates. This is the cladding used on most Sydney sandstone fences and feature walls.
Sawn sandstone veneer tiles are diamond-sawn to 20–30mm with a flat face, supplied in set formats (300x600mm is the most popular) for stack-bond or brick-bond layouts. Choose them for clean contemporary lines, interior walls and anywhere you want a smooth, even face. Rockfaced facing blocks are the third option: 110mm bedwidth blocks with a pitched rock face, laid as a mortared skin for a solid, traditional wall profile on piers, fences and low walls.
Substrates, Fixing and Weight
Sandstone cladding is fixed with a flexible stone adhesive to a sound, render-coated masonry or concrete wall, with mechanical fixings added for pieces over about 40mm thick or on walls above eye height. Thin handsplit cladding at 30–50mm weighs roughly 75–120kg per square metre, well within the capacity of standard brick and block walls; sawn veneer at 20–30mm is lighter again and suits lightweight framed walls over a cement sheet substrate.
Exterior cladding should be sealed after installation with a penetrating (impregnating) sealer, which keeps water and dirt out of the surface without changing the colour, and resealed every three to five years. Around pools use a sealer rated for salt and chlorinated water. Interior cladding rarely needs more than a single coat.
Colours and Matching Existing Sandstone
Because the cladding comes from a working quarry rather than a pre-cut catalogue, colour can be matched to existing stone on the house — a common request in the Eastern Suburbs, North Shore and Inner West where Federation and Californian bungalow houses sit on original sandstone foundations. Bring a photo or a sample piece and the quarry will select stone from the same colour band.
Quarry-run pallets blend marbled white, white with greys, banded and light yellows, medium yellows with purple veining, browns, oranges and purples. For a uniform look, ask for a single-colour selection; for a natural, mottled wall, order mixed. Cladding can also be combined with sandstone capping on top of the wall and sandstone steps or edging at the base for a complete stone detail.
