Sandstone Garden Edging, Capping & Pool Coping Sydney
Sandstone garden edging, wall capping and pool coping are the finishing pieces of a stone landscape — the strips that hold a garden bed, the caps that close the top of a wall and the rounded coping that edges a pool. Stone Front supplies all three cut at the Glenorie quarry in Sydney’s Hills District, in the same stone as our pavers, blocks and cladding, from $95/m².
Edging is split or sawn to your width and length; capping is sawn to the exact width of your wall with a square, chamfered or bullnose edge; and pool coping is cut at 400mm or 500mm wide with a bullnose or pencil-round edge. Because the stone is processed where it is quarried, non-standard widths are simply cut to order.
Sandstone Garden Edging
The most popular garden edging is hydrasplit sandstone: 50mm thick strips split to widths of 100–200mm and laid on edge or flat to border beds, lawns and paths. The split face gives a natural, slightly rustic line; sawn all round edging gives a crisper, formal one. Both are bedded on a mortar haunch or compacted base and follow gentle curves in short lengths.
For a heavier edge, split sandstone logs at roughly 300x300mm double as low retaining edges and seats, and rough squared blocks make a stepped border for sloping gardens. Edging is sold by the lineal or square metre; tell us the run length and preferred height and we will convert it to pallets.
Sandstone Wall Capping
Wall capping is a sawn sandstone slab, usually 30–50mm thick, cut to the full width of a fence, pier or retaining wall so it overhangs slightly on each side and sheds water. Common widths are 230mm for a single-brick wall, 350mm for a cavity wall and 400–500mm for piers, with a square, chamfered or bullnose edge profile. Rough, split-top capping is also available for a rustic finish on dry-stacked walls.
Capping is what finishes a sandstone-clad or rendered fence and stops water tracking into the wall; it also protects cladding from staining at the top edge. Capping pieces are cut to your wall dimensions at the quarry, including mitred corners and pier caps.
Sandstone Pool Coping
Pool coping is the edge course around a swimming pool. Sandstone coping is sawn at 30–40mm thick and 400mm or 500mm wide with a bullnose (rounded) front edge, which is comfortable to sit on and safe to climb over. A drop-face or pencil-round edge suits contemporary pools. Coping is laid on the bond beam with a slight fall away from the water and sealed with a sealer rated for salt and chlorine.
Order coping together with outdoor sandstone tiles or pavers for the surround so the whole pool area comes from one colour batch. Radius pieces for curved pools are cut to a template.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does sandstone garden edging cost?
Hydrasplit sandstone edging strips start at about $95/m² and sawn edging at $120/m², ex-quarry. A 150mm-wide strip works out at roughly 6.7 lineal metres per square metre, so a 20m garden border in 150mm strips is about 3m² of stone.
What size is sandstone pool coping?
Standard sandstone pool coping is 400mm or 500mm wide and 30–40mm thick with a bullnose front edge, cut at the quarry in 400–600mm lengths. Radius and corner pieces are cut to a template for curved and freeform pools.
How wide should sandstone wall capping be?
Capping should overhang the wall by about 20–25mm on each side, so a 230mm single-brick wall takes 280mm capping, a 350mm cavity wall takes 400mm, and piers take caps cut to the pier plus overhang. We cut capping to your measurements.
Can sandstone edging follow a curved garden bed?
Yes. Short lengths of hydrasplit or sawn edging follow gentle curves; for tight radii use shorter pieces or split logs set on a curve. Coping and capping for curved walls are cut as radius pieces.
Does pool coping need a special sealer?
Use a penetrating sealer rated for salt-water and chlorinated pools, applied after installation and reapplied every two to three years. It keeps sunscreen, salt and pool chemicals from marking the stone.
