Sandstone Tiles Sydney
Sandstone tiles are sawn sandstone at 20–30mm thick with a flat face and square edges — the format you choose when you want the colour and cool feel of natural stone with the clean lines of a tiled floor. Tiles are stocked in standard modular sizes from 300x300mm to 600x600mm and cut to custom formats on request, in quarry-run colours from marbled white through banded yellow to brown and purple. Sawn, honed and sandblasted finishes are available depending on where the tile is going.
Outdoor Sandstone Tiles
For terraces, alfresco areas, balconies and pool surrounds, choose outdoor sandstone tiles at 30mm thick in a sawn or sandblasted finish. The sawn face has fine saw marks that give slip resistance underfoot; sandblasting adds more texture for wet areas. Popular formats are 400x400, 400x600 and 600x600mm, laid on a mortar bed over a concrete slab or on a compacted road base with a bedding sand layer.
Outdoor tiles pair with bullnose pool coping and sandstone step treads cut from the same stone, so a pool area, its steps and its surround all match. Natural sandstone stays cooler than concrete and porcelain in the Sydney sun, which is the main reason it remains the local choice for pool surrounds.
Indoor Sandstone Floor and Wall Tiles
Indoors, sandstone tiles are sawn to 20mm and usually honed to a smooth matte surface that is comfortable underfoot and easy to clean. They are laid like any large-format stone tile on a level screed with a flexible tile adhesive, then sealed with a penetrating sealer. Living areas, hallways, bathrooms and indoor-outdoor transitions where the same stone runs from the living room onto the terrace are the classic uses.
Sandstone wall tiles use the same sawn stock at 20mm for feature walls, splashbacks and fireplace surrounds — see the wall cladding page for split-face alternatives. Because tiles are cut at the quarry, formats such as 300x600, 600x900 and 900x900mm can be sawn to order rather than limited to what a tile showroom holds in stock.
Choosing Between Tiles, Pavers and Flagging
Tiles, pavers and flagging are the same sandstone cut three ways. Tiles are thin (20–30mm), flat and precise, and need a rigid base such as a concrete slab. Sawn pavers are the same square format at 50mm or more, so they can be laid on a compacted base without a slab. Flagging (crazy paving) is irregular split stone at 50–100mm for informal paths and patios.
