Sandstone Retaining Walls Sydney

A sandstone retaining wall is Sydney’s native way of holding a slope — the same stone the city is cut from, doing the same job in your garden. From the Glenorie quarry we supply every wall style at every scale: dry-stacked rough squared blocks, coursed split logs, formal rockfaced faces, and machine-placed boulders, with stone from $120/m² of wall face.

This page covers the decisions that shape a retaining wall project — which wall type suits your height and budget, when council approval and engineering apply in NSW, how drainage keeps a wall standing, and what the stone actually costs. When you’re ready, send your wall dimensions for a free quote, or come and hand-select the stone at the quarry.

The Four Ways to Build a Sandstone Retaining Wall

A sandstone retaining wall in Sydney is built one of four ways: dry-stacked rough squared blocks, coursed split logs, a mortared block face, or machine-placed boulders. Dry-stacked rough squared blocks are the classic garden wall — hand-laid, naturally drained through the joints, and the most economical finish, palletised at 4m² of wall face per pallet or hand-selected loose from the quarry bins.

Split logs (~300x300mm section, sawn top and bottom) course quickly into strong, clean horizontal walls — one log per 300mm of height. For formal, architectural walls, rockfaced or hydrasplit blocks at 110mm bedwidth build a mortared face with heritage character. And where the scale gets serious, select boulders and large rough squared blocks are placed by excavator, or gabion spalls fill wire baskets for a contemporary engineered look.

Heights, Council Approval and Engineering in NSW

In NSW, retaining walls over 600mm generally need council approval, and walls over about a metre need an engineer’s design — requirements vary by council, so check locally before you build. Walls near boundaries, or carrying a surcharge load such as a driveway above, can need approval at any height.

Whatever the height, drainage is what keeps a retaining wall standing: an aggregate-filled zone behind the face, a slotted agricultural pipe at the base falling to a legal discharge point, and free-draining backfill. Our crushed sandstone (75mm minus) is the natural backfill partner from the same quarry, and dry-stacked sandstone drains through its joints as well.

What the Stone for a Retaining Wall Costs

Stone for a sandstone retaining wall starts at $120/m² of wall face for palletised rough squared blocks, with rockfaced faces from $180/m², hydrasplit from $190/m², and logs, boulders and loose tonnage stone quoted by the job. A worked example: a 10m long × 0.8m high garden wall is 8m² of face — roughly $960 in rough squared pallets, or about $1,440 in rockfaced blocks, ex-quarry.

Installation is separate: hand-laid garden walls are within reach of a capable owner-builder, while mortared, engineered and machine-placed walls are priced by your wall builder or landscaper. Send your wall dimensions and we will quote the stone, the crushed sandstone backfill and delivery to your suburb — quotes are returned the same business day where possible.

Why Sandstone Outlasts Timber and Concrete Walls

Sandstone retaining walls outlast the alternatives because the wall is solid stone all the way through: nothing rusts, nothing rots, and nothing delaminates. Treated pine walls are cheaper upfront and quick to build, but typically last 15–20 years before posts and sleepers give out; concrete block systems are engineered and easy to lay, but carry a manufactured face that never improves with age.

Sydney’s own sandstone walls — cut in the 1800s and still holding — are the argument. The stone drains through its joints, weathers into the landscape, and can be reworked or extended decades later with matching stone from the same quarry. If your wall is a feature you will look at every day, stone is the finish that earns its price.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a sandstone retaining wall cost in Sydney?

The stone runs from about $120/m² of wall face for rough squared block pallets, $180–$190/m² for rockfaced or hydrasplit faces, with logs, boulders and loose blocks quoted by the tonne. Installation is priced separately by your wall builder and depends on height, access and engineering — send your wall dimensions for a free stone and delivery quote.

Do I need council approval for a sandstone retaining wall?

Most NSW councils allow retaining walls up to 600mm without approval; above that you generally need consent, and above about a metre an engineer’s design. Walls near boundaries or under surcharge loads such as driveways can need approval at any height — check your council’s rules before you build.

Which sandstone is best for a retaining wall?

For garden walls to about a metre, rough squared blocks or split logs are the most economical and easiest to build. For a formal mortared face use rockfaced or hydrasplit blocks; for structural or naturalistic walls at scale use large blocks, select boulders or gabion spalls in baskets.

How long does a sandstone retaining wall last?

Built with proper drainage, a sandstone wall is effectively permanent — Sydney has sandstone retaining walls well over a century old still doing their job. Timber sleeper walls typically last 15–20 years by comparison, and concrete faces fade and stain long before stone does.

Does a sandstone retaining wall need drainage?

Yes — every retaining wall needs a drainage zone: free-draining backfill such as crushed sandstone, a slotted agricultural pipe at the base falling to a legal discharge point, and weep paths through the face. Dry-stacked sandstone also drains naturally through its open joints.
