Sandstone Retaining Wall Cost: Prices per m² and a Worked Example

Sandstone retaining wall materials in Sydney start from about $120 per m² of wall face for rough squared blocks, $180/m² for rockfaced blocks, $190/m² for hydrasplit blocks and $250/m² for sawn all round blocks (ex-quarry guide prices). A 10m-long, 0.9m-high wall has 9m² of face, so the stone alone costs roughly $1,080 to $2,250, before delivery, drainage, footing, approvals and labour.

  • Budget block option: rough squared blocks from $120/m² of wall face
  • Formal block option: sawn all round blocks from $250/m² of wall face
  • Logs and boulders: priced by quote
  • Approval: most NSW councils require approval above about 600mm; engineering is typically needed above about 1m
  • Labour: often a large share of the total — always get itemised quotes

How much does a sandstone retaining wall cost per m²?

Retaining wall stone is priced by the square metre of wall face — the length of the wall multiplied by its height. These are ex-quarry "from" prices; final pricing depends on quantity, finish and delivery.

How to measure your wall area

Multiply the length of the wall by its total height, including the bottom course that sits partly below ground. A wall that steps down a slope is easiest to measure in sections: work out the area of each section and add them together. Returns at the ends of the wall count too. Then add a margin — commonly 5–10% — for cutting, breakages and picking good faces.

For log walls, count lineal metres instead: each 300mm log course needs one lineal metre of log per metre of wall, so a 900mm wall needs three lineal metres of log for every metre of length.

Sandstone retaining wall cost per lineal metre

Landscapers often talk in lineal metres rather than square metres. Multiply the guide price per m² by the wall height to get the materials cost for each metre of wall length.

Rough squared blocks ($120/m²)about $72/mabout $108/mabout $144/m
Rockfaced blocks ($180/m²)about $108/mabout $162/mabout $216/m
Hydrasplit blocks ($190/m²)about $114/mabout $171/mabout $228/m
Sawn all round blocks ($250/m²)about $150/mabout $225/mabout $300/m

*Walls around 1.2m high are above the height where engineering is typically required, so the stone may form a smaller share of the total. These are materials-only figures; the installed cost per metre will be higher once excavation, drainage, footing and labour are added.

Worked example: a 10m x 0.9m sandstone retaining wall

Take a typical backyard wall 10m long and 0.9m high, including the buried course. That is 10 x 0.9 = 9m² of wall face.

With rough squared blocks, each pallet covers 4m² of wall face, so 9m² is two and a quarter pallets: either order three pallets and keep the spare stone for steps or edging, or take two pallets and top up with loose blocks by the tonne. Note that at 0.9m high, this wall is above the roughly 600mm height at which most NSW councils require approval, so allow for that in your budget and timeline.

What else affects the cost of a sandstone retaining wall?

The stone is often not the biggest line on the invoice. These are the other costs to price:

Excavation and spoil removal

Cutting into a bank to make room for the wall, footing and drainage creates spoil that has to be moved or taken away. Clay, rock and tight access all add machine time.

Footing

Low garden walls are commonly built on a compacted base of road base or crushed sandstone; taller walls, walls on clay and walls under load usually need a concrete footing to an engineer's design.

Drainage

Every retaining wall needs a slotted ag pipe at the base, free-draining aggregate behind the stone and geotextile fabric against the soil. Budget for these materials and the outlet to stormwater; skipping drainage is the most common cause of failure.

Engineering and council approval

Most NSW councils require approval for walls over about 600mm or near a boundary, and walls over about 1m — or any wall supporting a driveway, pool or building — typically need an engineer. Design and approval fees vary, so ask for them upfront. Check your own council's rules.

Access and delivery

Sandstone weighs about 2.2–2.4 tonnes per cubic metre. Where a truck cannot reach the work area, crane-truck delivery can lift packs closer, which can save a lot of handling time. Narrow side passages and steep blocks increase handling time.

Capping and finishing

A capping course gives a crisp top and a seat. Sandstone edging starts from $35 per lineal metre (guide price), and wider capping can be cut to size by quote.

Labour

Labour is often a large share of the total, and it varies widely with wall height, soil, access, stone type and the installer's workload. We don't quote installation, so get at least two itemised quotes from landscapers or stonemasons that separate excavation, footing, drainage, stone laying and approvals. Itemised quotes make it easy to compare like with like.

How to keep a sandstone retaining wall within budget

  • Choose the face for the location: rough squared blocks behind garden beds, a more refined face where the wall is on show
  • Consider select boulders: they stack into a structured wall and cost less than sawn blocks
  • Hand-select loose stone: buy rough squared blocks by the tonne from the bins to match your exact quantity
  • Plan the height early: splitting one tall wall into two terraced walls changes the design, and may change what your council and engineer require
  • Get delivery right first time: one well-planned delivery, with a crane truck if access is hard, avoids double handling

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest sandstone for a retaining wall?

On our guide prices, rough squared blocks are the lowest-cost block option, from $120/m² of wall face. Select boulders can also be good value, as they stack into a structured wall and cost less than sawn blocks. Logs and boulders are priced by quote, so compare them against block prices for your wall.

How much wall does a pallet of rough squared blocks cover?

A pallet of rough squared blocks is stacked four layers high and covers about 4m² of wall face. The blocks are roughly one-man sized. You can also buy them loose by the tonne and hand-select from the bins at the quarry, which helps you match an exact quantity instead of rounding up to whole pallets.

Are sandstone logs cheaper than blocks for a retaining wall?

Logs are priced by quote, so compare a log quote against block prices for your exact wall. Logs need machinery to place but go up with fewer courses and joints; blocks start from $120/m² of wall face and most can be placed by hand. Ask for both options priced for the same length and height.

How heavy is the stone for a retaining wall?

Sandstone weighs about 2.2–2.4 tonnes per cubic metre. A metre of 300 x 300mm split log weighs roughly 210kg, so a 10m wall three courses high is about 6 tonnes of stone. Weight and site access decide the truck size and whether crane-truck delivery is worthwhile.

Does buying direct from the quarry help with cost?

Buying quarry-direct means you deal with the people who quarry, saw and split the stone, can inspect stock in person and can hand-select loose rough squared blocks by the tonne to match your quantity. Ask for a quote that itemises stone, crushed sandstone and delivery so you can compare it properly.
