Fence lighting

Solar fence lights

Small stainless steel solar lights that fix to a fence post or panel with two screws and give the boundary a soft warm line after dark. No wiring, no switch, IP65 rated.

Lighting a fence without running cable

A back fence is one of the hardest places to run mains cabling and one of the easiest to light with solar. A small light on every second post, or every two metres along a panel fence, defines the edge of the yard at night, makes the space feel bigger and gives you something to see from the house.

Our fence lights are a stainless steel and ABS body, about 10 × 5.5 × 8 cm, with a solar panel on top and a rechargeable battery inside. They charge in the day and switch on at night by themselves. A pack of four covers about 8 metres of fence at 2 metre spacing; the eight-light kit covers about 16.

Fixing to timber, masonry and posts

Each light fixes with two screws through the back plate; the holes are about 83 mm apart. In a timber post or paling use a stainless or coated wood screw. In brick or sandstone pillars use a masonry plug. Mount at about the height of a person sitting or standing nearby rather than at the very top of the fence, so the light falls down the face of the fence and the panel stays open to the sky.

The same lights suit deck edges and step risers, which is why we sell them as a Fence, Deck & Step kit. If your fence is a sandstone wall or has sandstone piers, see our notes on sandstone wall cladding and sandstone retaining walls.

Choosing the right fence light

Look for a weather rating (ours are IP65), a metal rather than thin plastic body, a warm-white colour rather than blue-white, and a clear description of the battery. Be wary of listings that quote very high lumen numbers for tiny panels. Ours state only what the supplier lists, and we do not quote a lumen figure because the supplier does not publish one. These are accent lights for defining edges, not security floodlights.

  • Stainless steel and ABS body, IP65.
  • Warm white, with a polycrystalline panel (2 V, 80 mA) and a 1.2 V, 600 mAh rechargeable battery per light.
  • Supplier-rated run time about 8 to 10 hours after a full charge; less in winter and shade.

Common questions

How many solar fence lights do I need?+

As a starting point, one light every 2 metres of fence. A pack of four covers about 8 metres and our 8-light kit about 16 metres. Closer spacing gives a brighter, more continuous line.

Can solar fence lights be fixed to a Colorbond or timber fence?+

They fix with two screws, so timber posts and palings are straightforward. For metal fencing use screws suited to the material and keep the panel facing open sky. If in doubt, mount to a post rather than a thin sheet.

Will they charge if my fence is in shade?+

They need several hours of daylight to charge fully. A fence in deep shade or facing away from the sun will give a dimmer light and a shorter run time. Choose the sunniest section first.

Are they bright enough for security?+

No. They are warm-white accent lights for defining a boundary. For security lighting you want a sensor floodlight designed for the job.

How long does delivery take?+

Typically 5 to 12 business days within Australia, free of charge. Packs are supplied as two boxes of two lights and may arrive in more than one parcel.
