Crushed Sandstone Calculator: How Many Tonnes Do I Need?
Enter the area and compacted depth of each layer to get the volume and approximate tonnes of crushed sandstone. Use it for paths, driveway bases, fill under slabs and arena bases.

- One tonne covers about 6.7–7.4m² at 75mm
Approximate only. Compacted crushed sandstone weighs roughly 1.8–2.0 tonnes per cubic metre; the real figure depends on grading, moisture and compaction. Allow a little extra for uneven ground and levelling, and use the depth your engineer, concreter or landscaper specifies for slabs and driveways. Send us the dimensions and we will confirm the tonnage in your quote.
How the calculation works
- Volume (m³) = length (m) × width (m) × compacted depth (m). 75mm = 0.075m.
- Tonnes = volume × 1.8–2.0. Compacted crushed sandstone weighs roughly 1.8–2.0 tonnes per cubic metre, depending on grading, moisture and compaction.
- Work out each layer separately (for example 150mm minus to build up a level, then 75mm minus on top) and add them together.
- Allow a little extra for uneven ground and levelling, and use the depth your engineer, concreter or landscaper specifies for slabs and driveways.
The figures come from our crushed sandstone guide, which explains them in more detail.
